GABE NEWELL

Gabe Newell is a name that resonates as the father of the pc gamer industry. Born on November 3, 1962 in Colorado, Gabe grew up in Davis, California. He attended Harvard University in the early 1980s but did not finish his degree. Instead, he dropped out to join Microsoft convinced by Bill Gates himself. He worked on the first versions of Windows, which was important back then.

In 1996, Gabe and his colleague Mike Harrington left Microsoft to start their own company, Valve Corporation. They used their own money to fund their first game, HalfLife which came out in 1998 and it was a massive hit both critically and commercially since it set a new standard for first-person shooters in games.

In 2003 Valve launched Steam a digital distribution platform for games on pc. At first, it was not popular since it was restricted to Valve games only, but since it opened its doors to other games companies, it has become the go-to platform for pc gamers. By 2011, Steam controlled most of the market for downloaded PC games. Gabe’s journey was not without its challenges. He faced criticism for his views on console gaming and even called the PlayStation 3 a “waste of time.” However, he later appeared at a Sony event to announce Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3, showing his ability to adapt and change his stance when needed.

Today, Gabe is one of the wealthiest and most influential people in the gaming industry, with a net worth of around $3.9 billion as of 2021. He continues to lead Valve and innovate in the gaming world.
